Ministry Boards

St. John members minister to one another and the community following Jesus’ example and the biblical commands to “love one another” and “love your neighbor as yourself.” We seek to nurture a culture in which every individual and every activity works together in support of our mission – sharing the good news of God’s love for all.

The mission of St. John is to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and joyfully to proclaim it to the world through worship, education, service, fellowship, and outreach.

Lay Ministry

The Board for Lay Ministry oversees the spiritual life of the congregation. Elders and Lay Ministers work with the Pastor to provide for the spiritual care of members.

The Board wants St. John to be known as the Caring Church. Under the leadership of the Board for Lay Ministry, Zone Leaders make a special effort to get to know members and be available to help in time of need.

Evangelism & Outreach

The Board for Evangelism and Outreach gives direction to efforts to intentionally reach out to community and world with the good news of God’s great love in Jesus Christ.

The Board is currently working on maintaining a visible presence in the community, serving the community, and encouraging people to come together around shared interests (scrapbooking or volleyball, for example).

Parish Education

The Board for Parish Education guides ongoing religious education efforts for all members, child and adult, as well as for prospective members.

The Board is working to increase the number of adult Bible Study opportunities and to increase participation in Bible study. Under the direction of the Board, St. John currently offers Sunday School for children and at least one Bible Study for adults on Sunday mornings and a number of Bible Study groups during the week.

Stewardship

The Board for Stewardship encourages all members to be fruitful managers of God’s gifts.

The Board is focused on educating the congregation on the many facets of Christian stewardship to help us be better managers of the time, talents, and resources God has given.

Youth Ministry

The Board for Youth Ministry is responsible for programs and activities of youth and young adults.

The Board supports an active ministry to middle school and high school students, with Bible Study on Sunday morning and meetings at various times each month for fun, service to the church and community, and Bible discussion.

Parish Properties

The Board for Parish Properties is responsible for all real and personal property of the congregation.

The Board inspects and monitors the congregation’s property regularly to ensure it is safe and available for use in furthering the mission of St. John. The Board sponsors work days periodically and considers how St. John can use our property to help meet the needs of the community.

Parish Administration & Finance

The Board for Parish Administration and Finance oversees the management of the personnel, legal, financial and business affairs of the congregation.

Lutheran Education

The Board for Lutheran Education acts as a liaison between the congregation and Walther Christian Academy and encourages Lutheran education at all levels (elementary, high school, college, & seminary).

The Board reaches out to families of Walther Christian Academy who have no church home so they know the love of Christ and of St. John. The Board is also looking for new ways the congregation can partner with Walther Lutheran High School and Concordia University Chicago to serve others.
